What Is the Procedure for Body Contouring?
The main goal of this procedure is to tighten and reposition sagging skin that remains after weight loss. It can help flabby arms, sagging breasts, an overhanging abdomen, and buttocks and thighs that have hanging pockets of skin. Before the procedure, patients are given anesthesia so they will be comfortable — your doctor will help you decide which type is right for you. Many incisions may be required to remove the excess skin and tighten tissue, but, if possible, they will be made in such a way that any scars can be hidden by clothing. After the procedure, a small tube may be placed under the skin to drain any excess fluid, and you may need to wear compression garments. It will take 2 to 3 weeks to recover.
Body contouring isn’t typically completed with only one procedure. It can take many procedures, spaced months or even years apart, to achieve the look you want.
Who Is a Candidate for Body Contouring?
First, you must be in good overall health and at a stable weight to be considered for body contouring. It can help patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, but it can also be used for patients who have had gastric bypass or a gastric band procedure. You should also be a nonsmoker, have reasonable expectations for what this procedure can achieve, and you should be committed to living a healthy lifestyle after the procedure.
It wasn’t easy losing all of that weight, and excess skin after weight loss may have you feeling frustrated and defeated. But a body contouring procedure can help – it improves the shape and the tone of tissue that can’t be improved with diet and exercise.
