Cellulite is a prevalent problem that is reported by approximately 80% of women of all ages. The dimpling of cellulite may not be a health concern, but it is certainly a problem that most women would like to do away with. Depending on the extent of cottage-cheesing going on, and on what area of the body, and on a woman’s preferences, cellulite can lead to overwhelming self-consciousness or to wearing certain types of clothing to cover the area. Let’s see what cellulite is and what can be done about it.
A One-Size-Fits-All Problem
Cellulite is not a discriminating problem. We see it on women in their sixties, and we see it on young women still in their teens. It is often thought that cellulite indicates that a woman has pounds to lose, but that is not the case.
Dimpling and puckering occur simply because fat cells press up against the fibrous bands of connective tissue that cover them. To explain, there is the surface of the skin, then, beneath that, a layer of connective tissue bands, then, beneath that, fat cells.
Why don’t men get cellulite? This is a question women may ask when they see men that may not be in great shape, and they see no dimples on his legs or backside. The nerve! The secret lies in the way that a man’s connective tissue bands pattern beneath the skin. Not only are these bands thicker, but there are also more of them, and they create a basket-weave type of pattern. A woman’s bands are less numerous, less thick, and they run in a vertical pattern. We’ll say it again, the nerve!
Some quick tidbits about cellulite include:
- Liposuction does not improve the appearance of cellulite.
- There is a hereditary component to cellulite.
- Cellulite may form more easily on areas affected by estrogen, including the buttocks and the hips.
- Physical activity can help by encouraging blood circulation.
