Determining the Best Form of Facial Rejuvenation for Your Goals

iStock 519332846 As we gained innovative new treatment options, like injectables and lasers, many adults interested in facial rejuvenation changed their views drastically. We have a way of doing this, us humans. When presented with new information, we often do a quick 180 without fully vetting our options through a side-by-side comparison. We meet a lot of people who want to look younger. The vast majority of them want to know more about the liquid facelift. Because we offer this service, as well as surgical facial rejuvenation, the only way we lean in terms of preference is what is in the best interest of the patient. Here, we do our comparison of the liquid facelift vs. surgery.

What is a Liquid Facelift?

The Liquid Facelift is based on the effects a skilled provider can achieve using injectable neuromodulators and dermal fillers. The procedure can be done in less than an hour and, because there are few notable side effects, patients can go right back to work and most other activities. The way that this process works is by introducing a custom combination of injectables to various areas of the face. This may include Botox for frown lines and drooping brows and various Juvéderm products for the cheeks, temples, under eye area, and lips.

The benefits of the Liquid Facelift are obvious. Treatment requires no anesthesia and no downtime (just don’t schedule a massage or dental checkup right after!). The results of injectable treatment look natural and the cost of care is relatively low. Still, the one issue patients may have is that they must touch-up their skin every so often to maintain the same look and, because injectables don’t stop the loss of volume, there comes a time when they may not be sufficient for natural-looking rejuvenation.

Is a Surgical Lift a Better Option?

Like injectables, a surgical facelift is like a Rewind button for a person’s appearance. Like the Liquid Facelift, a surgical lift has pros and cons. It can be difficult to discern which approach is right because there is a natural resistance to surgery when nonsurgical options are available. Some patients believe that surgery would be much more expensive (it isn’t always) and risky (the risks are very low). Some worry that a facelift and it’s tightening of the skin will look unnatural. These are all valid concerns.

A surgical facelift may not be what you imagine. It has been many years since surgeons focused primarily on the skin when performing facelifts. Once research understood that the shape and position of fatty tissue and muscle all drop as we age, medical science quickly caught up. Facelifts are now customizable procedures that achieve profound improvements by restoring the position of deeper tissues as well as the skin. The downtime needed after a full facelift is about 10 days. However, not every person needs a full facelift. Dr. Dahan has also developed a mini-lift procedure and often performs blepharoplasty to rejuvenate the upper part of the face rather than the lower.
