Facelift or Injectables? Maybe This Isn’t the Question!

Historically, facelift surgery has been the most viable option for facial rejuvenation. In the past decade, nonsurgical treatments like dermal fillers have changed the way we correct the signs of aging such as deepening creases and sagging jowls. While there are advantages to both methods of cosmetic care, they are not created equal. Injectables don’t require anesthesia and down time, but they also do not achieve the same results or the longevity of results as a facelift. On the other hand, a facelift can correct moderate tissue laxity but cannot restore volume where it is needed. Looking at the advantage and disadvantages, we might say that facelift surgery and fillers are actually a perfect pair.

What a Facelift Can Do

A facelift corrects age-related changes in facial structure. It does so by manually repositioning tissue in the deep plane of the mid and lower face. Facelift surgery is customized to the individual to correct concerns such as:

  • Nasolabial creases between the nose and mouth
  • Loose, sagging skin across the mid-face
  • Marionette lines between the mouth and chin
  • Neck bands
  • Double chin
  • Jowls

What Fillers Can Do

Fillers are advantageous because the results of treatment are immediately apparent. Not much can compare to fillers in terms of immediate gratification. However, there are limitations to what is possible with this method of nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. If one is not careful, dermal filler treatment can ultimately make the face appear generally puffy. Celebrities like Courtney Cox are evidence of this phenomenon.

Dermal fillers are an excellent solution for the early signs of aging. This treatment can smooth lines and creases around the nose and mouth. It can increase the plumpness of the lips. Fillers can be used under the eyes to camouflage undereye bags. Filler treatment can add volume to the mid-face; something even facelift surgery cannot do.

What is Right for You?

Facelift surgery and dermal filler treatment offer results that are independent of one another. Neither can fully do what the other does. For this reason, many of our patients combine the two for an appearance that is 10 or more years younger. Learn more about facial rejuvenation in a consultation with Dr. Dahan.
