How are breast lifts and breast augmentation different?
In a breast augmentation, implants are used to give the chest volume and increase the size of the breasts. This procedure can also help if your breasts are asymmetrical. There are different types of implants to choose from, such as silicone gel, saline, and “gummy bear” implants. There are pros and cons to each, and your doctor will help you to decide which type is best for you and can help you decide what size implant you would like.
In a breast lift, excess tissue is removed, and the tissue that remains is tightened and contoured. It can help breasts that sag because of pregnancy and nursing, sudden changes in weight, or aging.
Which procedure should you choose?
The choice of procedure depends on the results you would like to see. Some patients opt for both procedures to be done at the same time, to lift sagging tissue while increasing volume, firmness, and size.
For either procedure, you should be in good health and a nonsmoker. These procedures are done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. Most patients report only moderate pain, discomfort, swelling, and bruising that can be treated with pain medication. You don’t have to be done with pregnancy and nursing for a breast procedure, but keep in mind that any future pregnancy will change the results of a breast lift or a breast augmentation. And, make sure that any breast procedure you decide on is for you and no one else!
