Are You Wondering About Bioidentical Hormones?
- Posted on: Jan 30 2018
Decades ago, women traversing the years before menopause were commonly treated with hormone replacement therapy. Due to concerns that these synthetic products may not serve every person well (potentially increasing the risk of disease), this type of therapy pretty much came to a standstill. Lately, though, we’ve been hearing about bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. This is a service we are proud to offer to patients of our Reno practice. Here, we want to discuss what bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is and why this personal approach to health and wellness is so popular among not only women but also men.
What is bioidentical hormone therapy?
BHRT is a method of treating natural hormonal changes with hormones that replicate the body’s natural chemicals. This type of therapy is valuable because, with age, our thyroid gland starts to slow down. This results in a decline of T3 and T4 hormones in the blood, which often interrupts a number of processes, including metabolism. Low levels of thyroid hormones in the blood often result in low production of testosterone. Ultimately, a change in one hormone leads to changes in other hormones in the body.
Many women assume that hormone replacement is necessary to reinstate adequate balance between female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone. In many cases, the problem that leads to chronic fatigue, low libido, poor sleep, weight gain, and depression is low testosterone. Low testosterone in women has also been associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. Therefore, reinstating healthy levels of this hormone is often an integral aspect of BHRT.
Why BHRT is Gaining Steam
Let’s be honest, there are aspects of aging that just aren’t fun. We want to feel energetic and sensual. We want to have the stamina to engage in the activities that keep us interested in life, and we want to be able to manage weight, sleep, and other normal functions. Changing hormones can make this difficult. Men and women are seeking treatment for hormonal imbalances for one common reason: they want to feel better. They also want to age better, with lower risks for certain diseases. Reinstating optimal balance between hormones with bioidentical products allows the body to restore itself naturally.
