Thousands of women undergo mommy makeover treatments each year. This group of procedures that are tailored to each patient’s needs addresses the common issues that occur after pregnancy and breastfeeding. You may know them well; the stubborn belly bulge and sagging skin across the stomach, deflated breasts and persistent fat in areas such as the hips and buttocks. If the physical changes you’ve experienced in motherhood are not serving your highest confidence, a mommy makeover may be right for you. Here, we provide a timeline of what to expect before, during, and after your procedure day.
Finding Your Surgeon
The first step in recreating your body is to find a surgeon who can meet your needs. Your initial consultation is an opportunity for you to discuss your trouble spots and the results you would like to achieve. What you tell your surgeon is just as important as the physical exam part of this visit. Be thorough. Be completely honest. Be confident in asking for what you want. During your consultation, it is also beneficial to ask questions. Don’t be shy! We appreciate questions from our patients because, when we answer them, we know they are gaining peace of mind.
Most patients undergo a pre-op appointment approximately 2 weeks before surgery day. This visit provides another opportunity to ask any questions that may have arisen after your consultation. During the pre-op visit, you should receive more detailed information about what to expect on the day of your surgery. If you haven’t already, you will be given instructions on what medications and supplements to avoid before surgery. Prescriptions will also be given at this time. We recommend filling prescriptions early so there is no gap in pain relief.
You will need a loved one to drive you to the surgery center on the day of surgery. There, you will meet with the board-certified anesthesiologist to discuss previous experiences with anesthesia, if you’ve had any. You may ask the anesthesiologist questions at this time. In the surgical suite, anesthesia will be administered and you will quickly fall asleep.
After Your Mommy Makeover
The first two weeks of recovery after a mommy makeover are devoted to rest and self-care. A post-operative appointment will occur approximately one week after surgery to observe healing and remove stitches and drains, if necessary. Within the second week after surgery, many women are able to resume light activities. Nothing strenuous, and no rushing. Healing occurs at its own pace.
By the three-month mark after surgery, swelling is expected to be significantly improved. Tissues are healing and the final results of your mommy makeover will be more visible. At this point, you should feel well enough to get back to most of your normal activities, including exercise.
